Elisabeth Hoffmann and Hanno Woelm lead our corporate responsibility activities in APCO’s Brussels office. They helped organize the Discover Your Talent Day in cooperation with a number of other organizations and businesses.
As consultants operating in what peers sometimes call the Brussels “EU bubble”, our day-to-day work very much focuses on the interactions with expats working in and around the EU institutions. The Discover Your Talent Day on 21 February therefore was a unique opportunity for us to leave this bubble, focus on our commitment to the city that we live in and give back to the local community.
For the third time, APCO’s Brussels office participated in the Discover Your Talent Day which took place in the disadvantaged Brussels neighborhood of Anderlecht. Discover Your Talent is a project of the “Engage Key Cities” scheme which aims at creating volunteering partnerships with businesses which have a direct and positive impact on local communities. This year, APCO’s Brussels team organized the day together with Business and Society Belgium, a local NGO called Maks, as well as the companies Accenture, Elia and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
APCO’s team of 15 volunteers participated in this year’s event and, along with the other volunteers, welcomed around 80 local young job seekers to interactive workshops on CV writing, interview training, presentation skills, competence building, social networks and individual counseling. The objective was to give the participants a concrete idea of what to expect in the job market and we sought to provide guidance on the most effective way to find work. The event was not only an opportunity to support the local youth in their search for employment, but also a very enriching experience for us volunteers. Some of us will now continue our commitment via a mentorship program in order to ensure the long term impact of the project.
The managing director of APCO’s Brussels office, Philippe Maze-Sencier, has driven this initiative as a key example of APCO’s commitment to being a responsible corporate citizen, a reliable contributor to the local economy and the employer of choice in our industry:
“As a company, APCO is constantly seeking to create great opportunities for its staff and to offer the best career paths for employees. Globally, we are present in over 20 countries through a network of more than 30 offices, all of which are deeply embedded in the cities they operate from. Our commitment to professional excellence and to the communities we live and work in made partnering with “Discover Your Talent” an obvious choice. The APCO team in Brussels is totally dedicated to helping young people in Brussels sharpen the skills they need to pursue their aspirations in today’s challenging work environment.”
